Competition was nonexistent, so this one was a huge hit for the biggest video game console in the day. The football players look like blocky little robots. That's just a harsh fact. Technology was so inadequate back then, that every moving player flickered to the point where you could barely see the action. The sound effects were just brutal. Things were so limited that a scrolling screen was out of the question. Within a couple years, things would pick up slightly, with a competing console developing a football video game. It certainly was an improvement, with improved graphics, sound, and gameplay. But it was still nothing too impressive.
